Gadgets: Smaller Intel-powered gadgets will expand the market

Intel Corp.'s push to create and boost new categories of small, cheap Internet-connected devices is taking the world's largest chip maker in some unusual directions.

It's investing in wireless networks, or even buying them outright. It's relying on software that isn't from Microsoft. And it's looking at making processors cheaper and smaller rather than faster and faster.

To Chief Executive Paul Otellini, it's all part of bringing the Internet to new places and people, and computer makers are responding.

"I've not seen energy like this from our customers in a long, long time," Otellini told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "Everyone views this as being sort of hyperexpansive to the existing market."

A centerpiece of the strategy is the Atom processor, which packs the power of a PC-class processor from six years ago into the smallest space yet - 25 Atoms will fit on a square inch. It's intended for Mobile Internet Devices - iPhone-like tablets that provide a "full" Internet experience, better than that available on cell phones.

Somewhat larger than the MID is what Intel calls the "netbook," a small, cheap laptop. Taiwan's AsusTek has had a breakout hit in this category with its eeePC, which starts at $300 and uses an Intel chip. Other manufacturers, like Hewlett-Packard Co., are entering the space too, though HP is using a chip from Via Technologies Inc.

Otellini isn't concerned that low-power processors could "cannibalize," or steal, sales from Intel's high-end, high-margin products.

"If a higher-priced notebook isn't substantially better and doesn't offer more utility, shame on us," he said. "If there's cannibalization, I'd rather be the cannibal than someone else."

Bill Hughes, an analyst at the research firm In-Stat, noted that a relatively small group is behind the demand for netbooks, which some stores have had trouble keeping in stock.

"It's growing fast because it's very small," Hughes said. "It will continue to be a niche for the foreseeable future."

As for MIDs, Hughes said the firm's surveys indicate that consumers are much more likely to want a "smart" phone rather than carry another gadget along with a cell phone.

"Mobile Internet Devices are going to struggle in the U.S., but that doesn't mean they aren't going to be wildly popular in other markets," he said.

To connect these portable gadgets to the Internet, Intel is backing WiMax, a wireless technology sometimes described as a long-range version of Wi-Fi. Like Wi-Fi, it has its roots in the PC industry, but it's really a competitor to cellular wireless technologies.

Most major wireless carriers are skipping WiMax, planning instead to build out networks using Long Term Evolution, a successor to current cellular technology. To keep WiMax in the running, Intel is contributing $1 billion to a $14.5 billion venture controlled by Sprint Nextel Corp. that will build a WiMax network across the U.S., with a commercial launch sometime this year in a few markets.

Intel is also a minority investor in a consortium that bought a Japanese WiMax license. And in May, it paid $26 million to buy a wireless broadband license in Sweden. It did that without a partner, but Otellini suggested that the company is looking for one.

"You won't see Intel per se becoming a network operator. That's not our competency," he said. "But as a means to enable hundreds of millions of high-performance mobile devices that access the Internet - both notebooks and smart phones - I think it's a good investment for us."

Even though mobile WiMax has a head start on LTE, which won't be along until perhaps 2010, Otellini acknowledged that its success isn't a sure thing.

"Whatever happens with WiMax, the consumer will benefit, because it makes LTE happen faster," he said.

As Intel is looking for partners for WiMax, it's drifting away from an old friend. For two decades, Intel processors and Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software were so closely associated that the joint platform was called "Wintel," much like celebrity couples TomKat and Brangelina.

But the union has been looser in the last few years, with Intel-based servers increasingly being used with the upstart Linux operating software. On the consumer side, Apple Inc., which has its own operating system, adopted Intel processors in 2006.

The push into smaller gadgets is set to take Intel further away from Microsoft. "Netbooks" generally run Linux or Windows XP, which Microsoft has been trying to discontinue in favor of its flagship, Vista.

"Vista has a larger memory footprint, a larger graphics requirement and a higher price point. This is all about low-cost computing," Otellini said.

He noted that Microsoft has an operating system for smart phones, but it runs only on chips designed by Intel competitor ARM Holdings PLC.

"I see much of the activity in Mobile Internet Devices, sort of the evolution of the handset, being centered around Linux," he said.

Mac OS X Leopard Gets Forty One New Spots

Mac OS X is safer today than it was Tuesday, thanks to Apple. The company on Wednesday posted Security Update 2008-003, containing forty one performance and security fixes for the enhanced Active Directory, AirPort, iChat, Mail, Time Machine and several other components of the company’s operating system. It also fixes a flaw in iCal that would leave machines vulnerable to remote code execution and potential hacking or theft of data.

The update, for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac Server OS X 10.4.11, brings Leopard users to version 10.5.3, and is strongly recommended for anyone using prior versions. Mac OS X 10.5.3 also was released this week and contains the update. The patch also fixes application-terminating bugs in AFP Server, AppKit, Apple Pixlet Video, ATS, CoreFoundation, CoreGraphics, the Flash Player Plug-in and Help Viewer. Seven fixes affect the Flash Player alone, which was vulnerable to malicious code hidden inside Trojan content. Another seven repair Apple’s implementation of the Apache Web server, which was until now susceptible to certain attacks, including those from cross-site scripting.

Some of the other more severe security-breach fixes were in Apple’s Mail e-mail client and iCal scheduler. Mail had previously allowed one user to manipulate files and conduct other activities using someone else’s access privileges, and to remotely expose passwords when using single sign-on, expose Wiki Server user names and enable various other forms of remote attack. The iCal issue involves unexpected application termination, but only affects systems running Mac OS X 10.5. Details about other security-related fixes are available at Apple’s Security Update 2008-003 page; there’s a separate page for non-security-related details.

Nokia maintains No 1 in mobile phone sale

POPULARITY OF mobile phone is increasing day by day, as it has became
one of the most popular devices for communication. Market of mobile has
increased with 13.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, over the
first quarter of 2007.

According to Gartner, Nokia still maintained its position
as a number one market vendor with selling of 1152 lacs mobile set in
the first quarter of this year. Although the market share of Nokia has
slightly comedown. But with the wider range, Nokia is capable of
leading, in the market. Samsung is the the number two vendor of mobile
phone market. Its performance was quite apprehensive. Samsung sold 424
lakhs mobiles in this period. Motorola, the third vendor of market,
showed some poor results and sold only 299 lakhs units. There is a huge
gap between the performance of Motorola and Samsung in the first
quarter.

For the fourth position, there was
competition between LG and Sony Ericsson. But in this first quarter, LG
got very good start and occupied the fourth position in worldwide
market.

LG sold 236 lakhs mobile sets, whereas Sony Ericsson sold only 221 lakhs sets.

"While
sales in emerging markets continued to be driven by strong growth of
net new subscribers, mature markets felt the pressure of an uncertain
economic environment," said research director for mobile devices at
Gartner, UK, Carolina Milanesi. "Sales of high-end devices in
particular were lower as consumers turned to mid-tier devices when
looking to upgrade their old phones. Phone manufacturers should
strengthen their mid-tier offerings in order to cater to those users
that might be reticent to invest too much money in replacing their old
phones when the economic environment remains challenging."

Nokia merger to put mobiles on the map

BEIJING, May 31 -- Nokia Oyj may get approval from
European Union regulators for its 8.1 billion U.S. dollars acquisition of Navteq
Corp, the world's largest digital map maker, sources said Friday.

The European Commission expressed no opposition to
the merger at a meeting last week, the sources, who requested anonymity because
the discussions aren't public, told Bloomberg News.

Regulators found there was robust competition in the
market for personal navigation devices, they said.

The case would be the second acquisition of a digital
map making company cleared by the EU this year.

Earlier this month regulators approved plans by
TomTom NV, Europe's biggest maker of car-navigation devices, to buy Navteq rival
Tele Atlas NV for 2.9 billion euros (4.5 billion dollars).

"The reasons to block TomTom-Tele Atlas are the same
for Nokia-Navteq," said Richard Windsor, a mobile phone analyst at Nomura
Securities in London.

"If they've let through TomTom-Tele Atlas, I can't
see why they'd block Nokia-Navteq."

Espoo, Finland-based Nokia, the world's largest
mobile-phone maker, agreed to buy Chicago-based Navteq In October to add maps to
its products and compete with TomTom and Garmin Ltd.

Nokia expects to hear from the commission by the
August 8 deadline, spokesman Kari Tuutti said. He declined to comment further.

Jennifer Schuh, a Navteq spokeswoman, didn't
immediately return messages seeking comment. Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd
declined to comment.

Shipments up

Global mobile-phone shipments probably will increase
12 percent to 1.26 billion units this year, said Bonny Joy, an analyst at
Boston-based researcher Strategy Analytics.

Garmin has predicted that prices for navigation gear
will fall by 20 percent this year as competition intensifies and phone makers
such as Nokia add navigation to their devices.

The commission, the EU's antitrust regulator in
Brussels, is scheduled to rule on the Nokia-Navteq deal by August 8.

Nokia had the largest share of the mobile-phone
market in the first quarter with 39.1 percent, compared with Samsung Electronics
Co's 14.4 percent and Motorola Inc's 10.2 percent, Stamford, Connecticut-based
researcher Gartner Inc said in a statement last Wednesday.

Dell will continue to offer the Microsoft Windows XP operating system to customers beyond the June 30th deadline

Dell will continue to offer the Microsoft Windows XP operating system to customers beyond the June 30th deadline.

The announcement comes after CEO Steve Ballmer suggested earlier this week that Microsoft might change its mind and extend Windows XP if customers asked for it. Even so, he said most new systems ship with Vista, and to date they haven't seen customers asking for Windows XP.

Dell, Inc announced on Friday that it will offer Windows XP operating system to their personal computer customers after the June deadline.

Microsoft has scheduled to pull the Windows XP operating system from store shelves on June 30 in an effort to upgrade customers to Windows Vista.

"We are now offering an optional Dell-provided service to install Windows XP Professional for a customer while also providing the customer with a Windows Vista license and Windows Vista operating system DVD," Dell said in a statement.

However, there is a catch. Customers would be required to purchase a copy of Windows Vista to participate in the XP offer.

Though it has been widely reported that the Dell downgrade option would be good through 2010, upon the release of Microsoft Windows 7, Dell now says the program will last as long as Microsoft supports it.

The announcement comes after CEO Steve Ballmer suggested earlier this week that Microsoft might change its mind and extend Windows XP if customers asked for it. Even so, he said most new systems ship with Vista, and to date they haven't seen customers asking for Windows XP.

Microsoft has already announced that Windows XP will continue to be available specifically for ultra low-cost systems that do not meet the system requirements for Vista.

The announcement comes after CEO Steve Ballmer suggested earlier this week that Microsoft might change its mind and extend Windows XP if customers asked for it. Even so, he said most new systems ship with Vista, and to date they haven't seen customers asking for Windows XP.

Nintendo- '100 Wiiware games on the way'

In a recent interview, Nintendo talk about Wiiware's limitations, the options available to game makers on the service, and again dodges discussing the storage issues of the Wii.

In an interview with NOA's senior director of project development, Tom Prata, IGN ask the following;

IGN: We know a lot of developers have completed WiiWare games which haven't yet been released. Will new WiiWare titles be released every Monday? What is the limit you're putting on how many WiiWare games can be released every week?

Tom Prata: Our plan is to make new WiiWare games available on Mondays, as we do with Virtual Console titles. We have not set a limit to the number of games that will launch on any given Monday. Rather, we are working with developers and their production schedules to bring the products to consumers in a timely manner.

IGN: What is the most popular WiiWare download so far?

Tom Prata: We don't have sales information to share at this time, however we are pleased to see consumers enjoying the games made available by WiiWare developers.

IGN: We recently had to delete half the games and Channels on our systems to make room for two WiiWare titles. Lack of storage space has become a huge problem. What're your thoughts on this issue? Will Nintendo address it soon?

Tom Prata: Consumers have the option of either deleting the game and downloading it again for no additional Wii Points, or transferring the game from Wii to external SD memory card.

IGN: Can WiiWare developers use all of Wii's abilities? For instance -- connection between Wii and DS, WFC, online, etc. -- if they want? What about Miis?

Tom Prata: Developers have the ability to utilize the same Wii features for WiiWare games as they do for disc-based games, including Wi-Fi Connection, WiiConnect24 and variety of controllers and peripherals. What is important is providing developers the freedom to use the features that are most valuable to express the characteristics of their game. Regarding the use of Miis, Mii characters are included in games like TV Show King and Dr. Mario Rx .

IGN: WiiWare games need to weigh in under 43 megabytes, we've been told. Is this true? Are there any plans to increase the file size limit?

Tom Prata: Similar to the breadth of Virtual Console content, WiiWare games will also come in a variety of sizes and at different Wii Points. We want to encourage creators to focus development resources on areas that matter most to consumers: gameplay. Nintendo is not planning on requiring developers to fill large amounts of data and believe there is sufficient space to create compelling, new gameplay experiences.

IGN: Currently, there is no way to demo WiiWare games before you buy. Might this change?

Tom Prata: We do not intend to have a 'try-before-you-buy' model that requires developers to create demos. There are a variety of places to learn more about WiiWare games such as the Nintendo Channel where consumers can find game information for WiiWare together with retail Wii products, Virtual Console and DS games.

IGN: How many WiiWare games do you have the queue?

Tom Prata: Currently, there are about 100 games in development for WiiWare at various stages of completion.

IGN: For launch in America, Nintendo itself did not release any first-party WiiWare games. Why not?

Tom Prata: As we looked at the launch line up, we wanted to provide games that are widely appealing to all consumers -- something for everyone to enjoy. Equally diverse are the creators of these games representing companies of different sizes and cultures. These companies demonstrate the range of WiiWare developers from a large publisher like Square Enix, to established independent developers such as High Voltage and Frontier to small indie developers like XGen.

Nintendo, like other publishers, is working on some experimental projects we plan to make available in the future.
