Apple: New MacBooks, Same Old Prices

From a product point of view, Apple CEO Steve Jobs usually goes bold. But when it comes to running the company's numbers, he rarely goes out on a limb. That was made plain Oct. 14, when Jobs announced a new laptop lineup. Despite rumors he'd introduce a laptop for $800 or less that might have helped Apple (AAPL) gain market share at the expense of margins, the company held prices close to where they've always been.

The company trimmed the price of the basic MacBook by $100, to $999. It also introduced a new midlevel MacBook with many of the features of the MacBook Pro starting at $1,300—the same as the old mid-range MacBook—and a version of the swankier MacBook Pro for $2,000, the same as its predecessor.

No doubt, there's more Mac for the money. All of the new devices feature an instant-on, backlit LED screen and faster graphics, courtesy of a chip from NVIDIA (NVDA), while the $1,300 and $2,000 models are packaged in a beautiful new aluminum shell that's thinner than ever.
Why Trim Margins?

But many Wall Street analysts thought Apple would use the product introductions to steal a large chuck of market share. After all, the company has grown two to three times faster than the PC market over the past four years, thanks in part to a successful "I'm a Mac" ad campaign and disappointing demand for Microsoft's (MSFT) competing Vista operating system. Apple even said it would sacrifice some margin (BusinessWeek.com, 7/21/08) during the quarter that includes the yearend holidays. While Apple has enjoyed this success by focusing on customers willing to spend for a higher-end machine, BMO Capital Markets analyst Keith Bachman figured that an $800 MacBook would help Apple compete for 62% of the laptop market, vs. 51% of the market with a low price of $999.

But giving in to the margin-grab temptation would have been risky to Apple's long-term health, says Stephen Baker, an analyst at NPD Group. A slew of PC companies over the years (Packard Bell and eMachines, anyone?) became money-losing businesses by slashing prices too far. Gross margins narrowed not only as a result of lower prices but because price-conscious shoppers with less tech acumen make more support calls. As a result, any profits on the initial sale frequently disappeared amid rising customer service costs.

Apple can keep on rankling rivals without overdoing it on price cuts. The company's share of the U.S. retail PC business is now 18% by units and 31% by sales, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said at the Oct. 14 product introduction. He noted that Apple has sold as many Macs in the past three quarters as it did all of last year.

Apple also has little reason to move on prices, given a relative lack of new technologies or features from PC makers this Christmas. Baker figures most people who want to try out a Mac already have decided to do so. As a result, a big price cut would needlessly eat into Apple's revenue. "People come into Apple stores expecting to pay a certain amount," he says. "There's no evidence that customers are particularly asking for a $799 Mac. But if you offered it to them, many of them would make that choice…One of the reasons Apple does so well at selling $1,000 computers is that they don't give you the choice of a $799 model."
Consumers Still Pony Up for Electronics

Of course, the reluctance to cut prices too far could alienate customers looking for a bargain amid economic turmoil. Fears of Apple's exposure to a big downdraft in consumer spending sent Apple shares down 5.6%, to 104, on Oct. 14. "People say Apple is fortunate to sell to more sophisticated customers, not Joe Six-Pack," says Roger Kay, founder of Endpoint Technologies Associates. "But a lot of those sophisticated customers were supporting their spending with credit last year. Some of those folks that want to put the fancy Apple decal on their fancy car won't have the cash for a new Mac this year. They may settle for something cheaper."

But so far, there's little evidence to suggest that U.S. consumers are getting thrifty when it comes to consumer electronics, says Baker of NPD. Three of the best-selling categories—digital SLR cameras, LCD televisions, and laptops—are "also among the most expensive products you can buy," he notes. "And sales of all three have continued to grow throughout 2008." Jobs hopes the trend continues well into the new year.

Is it Time to Switch to an Apple Laptop?

With today's announcements about refreshes to the entire Apple MacBook family of laptops, no doubt, half the members of the Apple cult have already run out to the nearest Apple store.

View a video explaining today's Apple event:

See Video http://www.pcworld.com/article/152226/is_it_time_to_switch_to_an_apple_laptop.html

But should the average PC user/gamer jump, too? Here are five big things Joe PC needs to know before deciding.

1. Die Integrated Graphics, Die!

Intel's integrated GPU, which most Windows-based laptops use, is about
as elegant as a moose in a tutu. With today's Apple announcement, a
reasonably powerful integrated graphics system is available for laptop
motherboards: nVidia's new GeForce 9400M. And the Apple MacBooks have
it.

2. On the SLI

The new
9400M nVidia graphics chip set is like cake frosting for the new
high-end MacBooks. Apple now pairs the motherboard GPU with an
additional GeForce 9600M GT graphics-intensive application. This means
games!

3. It's in the Air

Someone at Apple must have said, "Hey, I love the MacBook Air's keyboard.
Let's put it on everything else and use a similar slim design." Done.
For green techies, that also means fewer parts, less waste, and an
all-around thumbs up from Mother Earth.

4. Show Apple the Money!

Most
of the refreshed notebooks feature updated designs, slightly beefed-up
hard drives, and roughly the same price as before. Run the specs before
you buy.

5. Is It Time for PC Users to Go to the Mac Side?

The decision about whether to jump ship depends on how badly you want to play games (or use Photoshop) on a MacBook.

Already, nVidia has deals inked with five of the top 10
Windows notebook manufacturers. And as soon as next week, we expect to
hear news of a Windows-based notebook flaunting the same 9400M.

Let's dig a little deeper into all of this.

A New Graphics Game

Matt Peckham, PC World's Game On columnist, got it half right the other day when he pondered whether the new MacBook Pros would prove to be decent gaming machines. He was railing about how the GeForce 9600M GT is just the step-up model from the 8600M that currently resides in MacBooks.

But he didn't factor in the new integrated GPU on the
motherboard--the GeForce 9400M--which is stuffed into the new MacBook
Pros as well. nVidia had planned to announce the release of notebooks
with Hybrid SLI (short for "scalable link interface") performance on October 15, and Apple was a day early.

What Exactly Does Hybrid SLI Performance Mean?

Hybrid SLI
means that the on-board graphics power is sufficient to handle
high-definition video. And when you want to run a more
graphics-intensive app, such as DirectX 10 games,
the technology flips the switch into a turbo mode where the two GPUs
piggyback--conceivably boosting performance by 80 percent, according to
nVidia spokespeople. Take that, Intel!

From the get-go, these new nVidia chip sets are going to be
better than Intel's current graphics option. But how much of a
performance boost will these new machines deliver? That remains to be
seen: We don't have one in the labs--yet.

All in all, this looks to be a big first step for Apple (and for nVidia). Plenty of people have used Boot Camp with their MacBooks to obtain their preferred mobile gaming platform. For instance, PC World's Matt Peckham (again!) played Dead Space
on a MacBook with all the settings cranked to 11--and it ran without a
hitch. Offering a more robust alternative can only be a good thing. But
don't forget that nVidia's tech is sure to touch down on Windows-based
laptops pretty soon.

$300 and can be purchased online at http://www.sonystyle.com, Sony Style
retail stores and Sony authorized retailers across the country.

Academy Award(R) nominee Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness) stars in
the action- packed comedy as Hancock, a sarcastic, hard-living, and
misunderstood superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public. When
Hancock grudgingly agrees to an extreme makeover from idealistic publicist Ray
Embrey (Jason Bateman, Juno), his life and reputation rise from the ashes and
all seems right again -- until he meets a woman (2003 Academy Award winner
Charlize Theron, Actress in a Leading Role, Monster) with similar powers to
his and the key to his secret past.

Mega Man 9 reminiscent of old-school Nintendo

These days, the trend of creating a new game
in a beloved video game franchise typically dictates that you have to
make the experience as modern as possible.

This
could include bringing a game from 2D into 3D, adding complicated
stories and making graphics as flashy as possible. In some cases, this
has worked extremely well, such as with the "Mario" and "Zelda"
franchises.

With others, the results have been less than pretty, like the 3D iterations of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series.

But it's practically unheard of for a game developer to decide not to move forward, but, rather, backward.

This is exactly what Capcom has done with their beloved "Mega Man" franchise.

Over
the years, the Blue Bomber has landed on just about every platform
under the sun, doing everything from fighting computer viruses to
playing soccer. But the "main" series, the games numbered one through
eight, were mostly found on the old Nintendo Entertainment System in
the 1980s and early 1990s and made brief appearances on the Super
Nintendo and Sony PlayStation.

Rather than build on the slick,
shiny 2D style of the PlayStation's "Mega Man 8" and try to "reinvent"
the series for the newer consoles, Capcom decided instead to make Mega
Man 9, a downloadable game for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The catch? It's entirely 8-bit.

The
game looks exactly like the old Nintendo games of yore, and the player
is capable of doing much more than he was in Mega Man 2. You can run.
You can jump. And you can shoot.

And that's pretty much it.

Even
the ability to charge your weapon - something of a staple of the series
for a long time now - has been removed. Mega Man is back to his true
roots.

The graphics are pixilated. The sound is a lot of "beeps"
and "boops." The story is cheesy and almost non-existent, and there are
deliberate graphical glitches and frame rate slowdown.

And the result is awesome.

The
game is an amazing throwback to the days when gaming was just starting
to take off. And, as was typical of many games back then, the game
doesn't keep you coming back because of its length - in fact, it can be
completed several times in one day. Rather, the game keeps you coming
back because you're simply unable to master it.

Asus Recalls Worm-Infested Eee PCs From Japan

Asus has not so surprisingly decided to recall the Eee Box B202 mini PCs infested with the W32/Usbalex worm
in Japan. The virus-y boxes are confined to the land of Gojira, since
it was only on Eee PCs tailored for the Japanese market. The numbers in
play are pretty sad, actually: Asus built a wimpy 4,500 boxes for Japan
and only sold 300, so the damage is limited to a few unlucky saps, who
will never buy Asus again. [Inquirer]

Asustek’s All-In-One Touch-Screen Eee Personal Computer Available for Pre-Order.

Certain partners of Asustek Computer have started to take pre-orders
on Asus Eee all-in-one desktop featuring touch-screen, which was
discussed long ago, but which will only emerge on the market in the
second half of November, 2008.

Asus Eee all-in-one desktop (model
ETP1602-WT-X0010) is based on Intel Atom processor N270 (1.60GHz) and
Intel 945 GSE core-logic with built-in graphics core. The novelty
sports 1GB of DDR2 memory, 160GB hard disk drive, Gigabit Ethernet
controller, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n controller, built-in audio, 1.3MP webcam
and so on. The system is equipped with 15.6” touch-sensitive screen
with 16:10 aspect ratio. Even though the Asus Eee all-in-one desktop
has touch-sensitive screen, it still comes bundled with keyboard and
mouse.

Yet another member of the Eee family is powered by
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and also comes pre-loaded with
StarOffice, Adobe Reader 8.0, Norton Internet Security (90 day trial
version), Express Gate, Skype, Eee Memo, SoftStyles, Eee Cam & Eee
Cinema software.

Asustek’s
new incarnation of Eee will compete against all-in-one desktops, such
as Apple iMac, Dell XPS One or Gateway One. Although the novelty is
much less expensive compared to its rivals, its performance is
dramatically lower since systems from other makers utilize much more
powerful Intel Core 2 Duo microprocessors. As a result, the success of
Asus Eee all-in-one desktop depends whether end-users will be satisfied
with low-performance Intel Atom processors or not.

The UK-based Play online store offers its customers to pre-order the Asus Eee all-in-one desktop (model ETP1602-WT-X0010) for £399 ($694, €510). The store promises to start deliveries on the 20th November, 2008.

Intel earnings up, future uncertain

Despite the ongoing financial crisis that is weighing down some tech companies, Intel earnings were up in the third quarter, narrowly beating analyst expectations.

Net income for the quarter was US$2 billion, or $0.35 per share, up from $1.8 billion, or $0.30 per share, in the same period last year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected $0.34 per share.

Intel's net revenue was $10.2 billion. Sales in both its microprocessor and chipset units drove revenue for the quarter, which ended Sept. 27.

The third quarter was the first full period in which Intel sold its Atom microprocessors and chipsets for low-cost PCs, and sales of the chips brought down the average selling price of microprocessors for Intel. Overall, the average selling price was lower sequentially, but excluding Atom shipments, the average stayed flat, Intel said.

The results included a number of charges, such as an impairment charge for the Numonyx investment and a restructuring charge.

Intel warned that it is difficult to know how the current economic environment may affect its business in the coming months. The chip giant plans to release a mid-quarter business update on Dec. 4. But for now, it is expecting revenue for the fourth quarter to be between $10.1 billion and $10.9 billion. The fourth quarter will include a charge related to the recent decision by Intel and Micron to close their joint production of NAND flash memory from an Idaho facility.

Executives discussing the earnings report on a conference call expressed concern about the potential effects of the financial meltdown, but they were also optimistic. “This is not the post-dotcom kind of downturn,” said Paul Otellini, Intel's president and CEO. After the dotcom downturn around the year 2000, demand for computers was low in part because there were so many available on eBay, offered by companies that had shut down, he said. “That skewed demand,” he noted.

This time, the downturn hasn't created that strong secondary market. Also, emerging markets are a new sector that remains strong, he said. “The emerging market pattern of more people coming into computing is unique now compared to other downturns, because the cost of computing has come down relative to their income levels,” he said.

Also, demand continues to come from companies that are building data centers, particularly companies looking for efficiencies there. “I’m of the opinion that technology will do well during this downturn, for the simple fact that we sell tools of productivity,” he said.

Still, going into the fourth quarter, Intel expects corporate buyers to continue to be cautious when they consider IT investments. Demand from consumers has also lightened up, but Intel continues to see a “healthy” interest in notebooks and netbooks, Otellini said. Demand overall has been very mixed, with some customers and channels seeing little or no impact from the economic trouble and other sectors expressing worries about the effects. "As we add it up, we don't know how much of that worry will manifest itself into reality and how much will dissipate," he said.

Otellini estimated that the financial services sector, which has been particularly hard hit, makes up 15 percent to 18 percent of Intel’s server business. If the segment continues to struggle, that’s a small enough portion of Intel’s business that the chip maker shouldn’t be hurt too drastically, he said.

Intel's results come just a week after competitor AMD said it plans to split into two companies, one to design chips and one to make them, in an effort to compete more effectively with Intel. AMD, which plans to release its third-quarter earnings report on Thursday, has reported losses in the past seven quarters.

Intel executives downplayed the effect they think will come from AMD’s announcement. “Nothing has changed,” Otellini said. Ultimately, someone has to raise capital, build factories, develop technologies and sell them to companies that sell products to customers, he said. “So, the food chain hasn’t really changed,” he said.

Owning both design and manufacturing is a competitive advantage for Intel, said Stacy Smith, Intel's chief financial officer. “It lets us bring low-power, low-cost, high-performance products to market,” he said.

Intel barely beats for Q3

Intel reported net income of $2 billion, or 35 cents per share, for
the third quarter, up from $1.8 billion and 30 cents a year ago.
Revenue was $10.2 billion for its third quarter, up 1 percent over the
same quarter a year ago. (statement) Analysts had expected the company to report earnings of 34 cents a share on revenue of $10.25 billion.

Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO, said in a statement:

“As we look to Q4, it is hard to know what impact the
financial crisis will have on end customer demand. We are confident
that our product portfolio, strong cash flow, commitment to deploying
new technology and market momentum will allow us to outpace peer
companies at a time when business levels are difficult to predict.”

updated:  In a call with analysts today, Otellini
said there were mixed signs for the outlook into the fourth quarter,
largely because of the uncertainty surrounding the current market
conditions. Corporate sectors are expected to be soft as IT feels the
impact of the economic conditions. Consumer side traffic is also
expected to be light, but he noted that interest in notebooks and
netbooks is strong. Likewise, the company acknowledged the changing
economic conditions and the uncertainty of the impact on Intel. It said
it would host a formal mid-quarter update on Dec. 4 to provide an
update on financial conditions and business trends of the quarter. At
this point in the economic crisis, it’s hard to predict - at this point
- what impact the crisis will have, executives said.

The company forecast fourth-quarter gross margin at about 59
percent, mostly flat compared to the third quarter. Revenue was also
adjusted lower than previously expected, to a broader range of $10.1
billion to $10.9 billion.

In a note to investors last week, Wachovia Capital Markets
highlighted several factors that could continue to support Intel’s
business – even as the global economic environment changes. From the
report:

Strong notebook growth: We believe that
the strong secular trend for notebooks will allow this segment of the
PC market to react with greater resiliency to the current economic
environment. Even if there is fairly significant deceleration in
growth, we think that the notebook market might still hold in at 25-30%
growth, excluding low-cost notebooks, in the second half of this year.

Atom: Over the last couple of months, several
notebook manufacturers have introduced new low-cost notebooks which
feature the Atom processor. We think Intel probably shipped several
million Atom chips in the September quarter, representing roughly $100
million or more of incremental revenue.

Stable pricing: In the past year, AMD has made a
number of significant price cuts, particularly in the desktop space,
while Intel has not responded with any major price cuts of its own.  We
believe that Intel’s pricing stability, relative to AMD’s, has been
sufficiently justified by a steady rollout of new and improved
microprocessor products.

Shares of Intel were down more than 6 percent in regular trading,
closing at $15.93. Shares were on the upswing in after-hours trading,
up more than four percent to $16.59.

Despite fog of hype, AMD chip fab is no Erie Canal

Equating the impact on upstate New York of a $4.6 billion chip fab plant in Saratoga County with what the Erie Canal did for us is certainly attention-getting but plainly absurd.

Even under the rosiest scenario, the Advanced Micro Devices spinoff facility in Malta is expected to create about 1,500 jobs, along with support industries that may develop. For how long, who knows? That factory, if it is built, will no doubt produce the very latest microchip and make Malta a household name wherever microchip is spoken.

But in a few years, a competitor in all likelihood will introduce a new, improved chip somewhere else on the global checkerboard and the game will change again.

This type of applied science is today's wild frontier. Needed improvements for various commercial applications are bound to produce continued development, innovation, and consequently a new Malta somewhere else.

By contrast, the low-tech Erie Canal and its expanded versions were instrumental in America's western expansion and created New York as the Empire State. The canal was a huge deal, affecting millions and millions of lives, through most of the 19th century. There simply is no comparison, as much as the AMD boosters would like to claim.

One of the problems many of us are having grasping the true importance of the chip plant probably coming to our region is the boosterism and hype the project seems to generate from our business community and government leaders.

It's hard to know what to believe; whether it's even going to materialize, for example. Although people I trust on the subject, like Assemblyman Roy McDonald, tell me that it will happen. Or if it doesn't, something just like it will.

"We did our homework and made the investments in infrastructure. This site is approved and ready for chip fab plants. There aren't that many of those around, so believe me, if we don't land AMD, we'll get another one. Of that I am absolutely convinced," says Roy.

I guess that's reassuring, although I still hear that touch of uncertainty concerning AMD.

What Roy and a number of others I've spoken with seem to be saying with assurance, however, is that change is on its way. Malta will have its day in the sun, and what we do with that burst of growth and international attention is a blank slate to be filled in, or not. Whether the region is ready to take advantage, or even adequately cope with change, is a matter of wide speculation.

Personally, I think for the most part the answer is no.

The town of Malta may be ready, with strong zoning and a smart development plan that anticipates what's coming. But just a few miles away, the beautiful farmland of Washington County is virtually without protection. No zoning, no vision. The attitude there seems to be what happens, happens. Under those circumstances, the worst kinds of sprawl and awkward growth are far more likely to happen than not.

I found it utterly charming but strikingly naive for Malta Supervisor Paul Sausville to tell Times Union reporter Jimmy Vielkind that "We don't want to lose our small town character. We like Malta the way it is."

California Physical Therapists Promote Nintendo Wii for Core Strength and Fitness

SACRAMENTO,
Calif., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- With October being NationalPhysical
Therapy Awareness Month, expect Nintendo Wiis to be flying off
theshelves. Among the first in line will be members of the California
PhysicalTherapy Association (CPTA), who stand by the video game console
and itsaccompanying sports and fitness games as one of the best
therapeutictechnology inventions to roll out in a long time.

"As physical therapists, we are movement specialists engaged in
theCPTA-sponsored MoveCalifornia campaign to get people active and fit
again. Inthe midst of this, we're seeing a therapeutic phenomenon of
sorts with kids,grown-ups and geriatric patients getting off the couch
and learning how toproperly use the Wii for core strength and balancing
exercises," said CPTAmember Amy Calhoun Sanchez, PT, DPT, CSCS,
NSCA-CPT.

Sanchez is a doctor of physical therapy working in the
outpatientrehabilitation department at a local Los Angeles hospital and
providespediatric home health care for developmentally delayed
children.

"In the clinic setting, we treat patients with acute and chronic
pain, those recovering from surgery or stroke and many other conditions
withspecific balance and strengthening exercises and manual therapy,
and theyrespond to that," added Sanchez. "But the Wii sports games are
interactive, fun and entertaining, and patients become more engaged
playing with them. Byteaching patients how to use the Wii in a clinic
setting, we empower them tocontinue their exercise, fitness and
training with the Wii Fitness in thecomfort of their own homes."

While Sanchez emphasized Wii is helpful in preventing injuries and
fallsand increasing functionality, she cautions that anyone with
undiagnosed painor untreated injuries should refrain from using the Wii
without professionalguidance.

"Playing a Wii game too soon after an injury can be extremely
harmful to aperson's health and even set back recovery or lead to
re-injury if he or sheis not properly evaluated by a physical therapist
first," said Sanchez. "Atherapist will help to decrease pain and
improve posture before recommendingor advancing a Wii regimen tailored
to the individual's specific needs."

Sanchez noted most physical therapy includes core stability
training, butoften it is difficult to teach people how to engage their
core. "They tend toarch their backs and put too much weight on their
heels in a way that causesfurther pain with movement."

"What's so great about the Wii is it allows a patient to know where
thebody is in space by showing real-time movements on a screen in
simulated yoga, aerobics, strength training and balance exercises,"
stated Sanchez. "The Wiiis the next best thing to simulating an
environment on the golf course ortennis court, so we can see first hand
what a person is doing wrong andcorrect that movement. The Wii makes
for simple and fun therapy and, rightnow, is the coolest, new therapy
around."

MoveCalifornia is a CPTA-sponsored statewide public education
campaigndesigned to call attention to the importance of wellness and
daily physicalexercise and the unique role physical therapists play in
these areas. Formore information about MoveCalifornia, visit the
