SONY has unveiled its latest addition to the Bravia range of Full HD LCD TVs, the Z450A series.

Available in 52in, 46in and 40in sizes, the Z450A is the world’s first LCD TV featuring Motionflow 200Hz which captures all the detail of fast-moving action scenes and makes them ultra smooth.

Using advanced algorithms, the Motionflow system calculates three additional frames for every original, increasing the frame rate from 50fps (frames per second) to 200fps.

At the heart of the Z450A is the improved Bravia Engine 2, a signal processor that reproduces realistic black, depicting objects with lifelike depth and detail, and removes blemishes or noise from the picture,.

Coupled with the Advanced Contrast Enhancer, the Z450A is supposed to produce, crisp, noise-free images.

Also, the Z450A features S-Force Front Surround system that delivers a wider listening area for realistic virtual surround sound.

And the Voice Zoom function maintains the level of ambient surround sound to maximise audio clarity to enhance the overall experience.

Sony makes it an early IT Christmas

This country is famous, some would say notorious, for having the longest Christmas season in the world.

We as a people are either the most deeply observant of this Christian festivity, or we are just simply addicted to merry making.

Whatever the case may be, and media reports of a recession notwithstanding, there is one more reason for local consumers to look forward to this year’s holiday season. Last week, Sony briefed members of the local IT media on the consumer electronics giant’s marketing campaign for the holiday season.

Christmas Treasures 2008 highlights Sony’s newest line-ups of consumer electronics the company claims are fit for the gift-giving season. The marketing campaign, which blasts off on November 14-15 at the Cebu Trade Hall and on December 5-7 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, presents consumers an opportunity to get personal and intimate with Sony’s eight latest consumer electronics technologies.

EC Treasure Chest

These are the Bravia Z450 LCD TV equipped with the Motionflow 240Hz technology, which enables it to precisely and smoothly display fast-moving images. Motionflow "enhances image stability by quadrupling the number of frame rate per second by interpolating three new frames to reduce motion blur."

Another LCD TV, the Bravia X450, comes with the RGB Dynamic LED backlighting technology. By merging the distinctive set-up of red, blue and green light-emitting diodes with dynamic backlight control, this LCD TV creates enough light to come up with rich dark tones that mimic innate images.

Quiet Vaio, All Quiet

The Vaio T Series is as compact and as lightweight as the other Vaio laptops. It, however, comes with a noise-canceling feature coupled with a Sound Reality chip. It also includes a set of noise-canceling headphones.

Other noise-canceling technology-equipped gadgets in the product mix are the NWZ-S730 Series digital music player, which comes with an EX set of headphones and an in-box adaptor that turns the Walkman player into a noise-canceling tool for other devices, and the MDR-NC500D headphones. Sony claims this set of headphones can reduce up to 99 percent of ambient noise and provide high-quality audio.

Slimmest, Most Pixels

Sony’s marketing push also highlights the most recent additions to its lines of digital cameras. Featuring the latest in the company’s technological breakthroughs, these include the Cyber-Shot T77, which at present is the world’s slimmest camera with an optical image stabilizer. The list also includes the a900 DLSR camera, which comes with the 24.6-megapixel full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor and a built-in image stabilizer.

On the other hand, the TG1 HD Handycam owns the bragging rights to being the world’s smallest, lightest and slimmest full high definition camcorder.

Calling Santa

All these will be fine and dandy as Christmas gifts for your loved ones, and to be honest, even more so for yourselves. After all, as Toshiya Kagita, president and managing director of Sony Philippines, said, "Our innovations are meant to enhance our customers’ appreciation of life."

We may yet have to raid our bank accounts, or revive our once fervent belief in Santa Claus. Waking up on Christmas morning with your stockings filled with one or two of these Sony products would greatly improve the holiday mood.

AMD layoffs didn’t affect graphics guys

We have learned that so far AMD didn’t cut any significant people from the ATI part of its operation. Most of the 500 that are going in this round are going from the CPU side and more than 1500 are from the headquarters in Austin.

ATI is executing flawlessly and only a mad man would cut them now, when they have winning products and have Nvidia by its gut.

AMD is already working on its new generation graphics products and they hope to be able to beat Nvidia again, this time in the 40nm arena.

AMD is cutting its staff due to predictions that 2009 will be a year of recession, full of slowdowns and it's highly likely that IT will have to slow down with the rest of the word, which definitely means less computer, CPU and graphics card sales in the upcoming year.

As Smart waits for NTC rules, Nokia unveils 3rd mobile TV handset in RP

Smart Communications joined dominant phone maker Nokia in introducing to the country recently its third mobile TV phone model, the N96, even as the PLDT-owned local operator anxiously waits for the government to issue the rules governing the commercial operations of mobile TV.

The grandiose product launch, held at Silvercity in Ortigas complex, was attended by top officials of Nokia Philippines and Smart Communications, particularly MediaQuest officials Orlando "Doy" Vea and Benjie Fernandez.

Though technically a Nokia event, the glitzy launch was co-hosted by Smart since the operator will be the first to offer the N96 to subscribers for its mobile TV service.

Smart launched its mobile TV brand, dubbed MyTV, in July last year but has been offering it for free up to now because the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) hasn’t released any guidelines yet on mobile TV in the Philippines.

At the launch event, brochures were distributed bearing the words "mobile TV subscription to be billed separately." But Fernandez clarified that this provision will take effect only upon the NTC’s issuance of the rules.

The N96, successor to the highly successful N95 "mini-computer," is the third mobile TV model that Nokia has rolled out in the country after the N92 and N77. These phone models are all offered by Smart, with its subscribers having the extra benefit of having mobile TV as a free value-added service — at least for now.

As the Finnish firm’s new flagship phone, the N96 is also being positioned as a high-end model with a price of R40,800.

The new unit has a 2.8-inch screen, 16 gigabytes of internal memory, and is compatible with a range of video formats, including Windows Media.

It also features a five-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, integrated Wi-Fi support, assisted-GPS navigation, and preinstalled N-Gage application.

`Nokia 5610 has blackout issues’

NEW DELHI: The US mobile service provider T-Mobile has put a halt on the just-launched Nokia XpressMusic 5610 due to complaints from T-Mobile customers that their display keeps going blank without any warning.

Last week, the company suspended sales of Nokia 5610 XpressMusic.

In a company statement T-Mobile said that the company has temporarily discontinued sales of the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic to address a defective component in some units that may cause the LED display to go blank.

Although we believe the issue to be limited to a very small percentage of devices, T-Mobile and Nokia are committed to providing the best customer experience, which is why we are temporarily suspending sales of the device until Nokia has resolved the issue.

Nokia 5610 ships with the company's `Comes With Music' package. The phone has a 3.15MP camera with flash.

Nokia’s luxury handset division, Vertu unveils three new Ferrari branded handsets

Nokia’s luxury handset unit, Vertu in tie-up with Ferrari announced the development of three new handsets namely the Vertu Ascent Ti Ferrari Nero, Vertu Ascent Ti Ferrari Rosso and Giallo.

“The original design for the Ascent Ti was heavily influenced by the dynamic power of luxury sports cars and working closely with Ferrari has enabled us to progress this vision. The new Vertu Ascent Ti Ferrari editions are the definitive automotive-inspired handsets – bold, balanced and with the unmistakable character of the Prancing Horse,” said Frank Nuovo, chief of design for Vertu.

The handsets have ring tones of original Ferrari engines with sounds taken from the F 430 and the 612 Scaglietti. Also the handsets are believed to use the same leather and stitching as latest Ferrari car interiors. Moreover the battery cover resembles a distinctive bonnet dialing with the sides of the handsets sculpted to reflect the louvers as found on Ferrari cars.

The name ‘Ti’ is derived from the non-corrosive element which has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal and an ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

The pricing details for these handsets remain undisclosed as of now.

Nokia Multiscanner Works On Other S60 Phones, Too

Just in case you thought that Nokia's Multiscanner application works with just the Nokia E71 and E66, it seems to work perfectly fine on other S60 handsets such as the N82. What's the Multiscanner anyways? This is a dual purpose card scanner and general text optical character recogniser (OCR) that literally makes it a snap to transfer information from a business card to your phone without having to key in the relevant details. Do take note, however, that the software will not be optimized for cameras in other handsets since various camera 'scanners' will need to be individually tweaked for optimal performance.

Intel vs. AMD: The CPU Landscape in 2009

Choosing a processor is an exercise in predicting the future. Given the rapid pace of technology, you'd ideally like a CPU—and the other parts of the system—to last a few years. Choose a CPU that's too new and you end up on the pricey, bleeding edge of the envelope. Choose one that's been around too long and you may find yourself struggling to run new software. Whether you're buying a PC, making an upgrade, or building a new system from scratch, you'll face the same problems.

There are also different manufacturers and product lines to consider, though when it comes to the processor game, Intel has been firing on all cylinders while AMD has been playing catch-up. The coming year looks to be more of the same. Both companies are poised to introduce new product lines. Intel is moving forward with a substantially new microarchitecture, whereas AMD is just now making the move to the 45nm manufacturing process, which Intel has been using for nearly a year. The smaller architecture allows CPU manufacturers to build processors that use lower power and run at higher clock speeds, as well as cram more transistors on a CPU die.

Still, moving to 45nm should make AMD somewhat more competitive, at least in the midrange and low-end desktop market. AMD's Phenom processor line had some advantage in certain types of servers, particularly those applications that benefit from low latency memory access. Yet Intel's latest CPU, the Core i7 series, may eliminate or reduce those advantages.

Let's cut through the mystery and take a look at the upcoming year in CPUs.

Comprehensive Intel Health Guide seeks to provide in-home health monitoring

In-home medical monitoring systems are far from new, but everyone takes notice when a firm like Intel formally announces that it's diving in headfirst. According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Intel is gearing up to launch a series of trials with health-care organizations in order to "show whether the new tools bring improved results in treating conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease." More specifically, the Intel Health Guide -- which includes a "simplified computer and software system that are designed to help elderly people and other patients monitor and manage their conditions at home" -- will connect to medical equipment and then transmit that information with specified individuals (namely health professionals) over the 'net. Admittedly, the initiative is far from being implemented in non-trial form, but it should be good to go by the time you start forgetting things and kvetching about the taste of your tap water.

Nintendo opens online channel

Official South African distributor for Nintendo, the Core Group, has opened an online store to promote the sale of its niche games that retailers will not stock.

The site will also stock back titles for local gamers, which have passed through retailers, but are no longer available.

“It is not easy to keep up with the latest release of video games at the best of times, and at the pace that Nintendo is releasing Wii and DS Lite titles to the market, customers might just find that they have missed out on some of the best,” says Core Group executive director RJ van Spaandonk.

The company is also asking gamers to send requests for the games they would like to see available to request@gamingstore.co.za. “We will carry the games that the retailers carry, and the back titles – we would like to hear from our gamers what they would like before Christmas,” he adds.

The company says, traditionally, gamers would order back titles and niche games from international online sites such as Amazon.com. “Gamers were paying heavy import duties and waiting weeks to get their games. We have a bulk import system, so we pay less on import. We will also hold the stock in SA, whereas international sites like Amazon would have to order per customer.”

Looking good

Nintendo Wii launched in SA just over a year ago and, according to figures provided by the Core Group, the company is expected to be the top third-generation console sold locally by Christmas.

According to Van Spaandonk, the company has sold 58 000 units since October last year. Sales have grown by 41% since the same period. The figures the company presented at its birthday last week showed that it holds 36% of the market share, compared to PlayStation 3 (PS3) with 14% and Xbox 360 at 22%.

“Something is fundamentally changing in the market,” says Van Spaandonk. He predicts that, by this time next year, the number of casual gamers will have outstripped the number of hardcore gamers in the market. The casual gamer has been the traditional market for Wii; it has also become a companion console for those who own PS3 or Xbox.

Van Spaandonk says the Wii has also changed the profile of gamers. His figures show that 46% of Wii gamers are women and 45% are older than 25 (the traditional target for hardcore gaming).

The company also launched its newest title for the Christmas period, Wii Music, last week.

Nintendo DSi hacked and deconstructed

THIS RETRO-CONSOLE would of been a dream item 15 years ago for console fanboys world-wide.

It's a NES-SNES-Gensis player, and it's all good. Crunchgear has it pictured.

Xbox 360
According to Edge, the New Xbox Experience (NXE) has found its way onto various dodgy torrent sites.

Microsoft has said that there will be plenty of 'surprises' coming for the Xbox in 2009 - and that up to half of the features planned for the NXE were dumped due to time constraints.

The handheld Xbox has once again been dismissed by Microsoft.

PS3/PSP
Sony plans to sell PS3 games through a new line of "PoP" entertainment vending machines in the UK this Christmas.

Bad news for Sony - the PS3 allegedly has the lowest console attach rate, and considering its expense, this could impact Sony's financials somewhat.

Better news comes from sales in Europe - the PS3 has outsold the Xbox in 2008 (but not the Wii).

Wii/DS
The DSi is reportedly filled with 256MB of memory - and various pirate cards will no longer work in the new console, according to Eurogamer.

Bunnie's blog (via Gizmodo) goes one further and deconstructs the console - and finds an improved processor might be draining theconsole's battery life.

This hasn't stopped it being hacked already though.

It seems to be doing well though - Nintendo sold 170,000 units in its first two days.

Nintendo does deal with EB for interactive lounge in Melbourne CBD

Nintendo Australia has done a deal which will see the company's products occupy an exclusive interactive lounge area on the upper floor of EB Games' new Swanston street store in the Melbourne CBD.

Renovations are underway and the space is due to be complete for opening in mid-December, an EB Games representative told Aussie-Nintendo today.

When asked whether there's any known relation to the Nintendo World Store in the United States, the representative said that they're aware that Nintendo is "looking to go bigger" and that they'll probably "personalise tailor it (the concept) to suit the Australian market now."

This development is "not in the structure of a franchise or anything...it's just an agreement between EB Games and Nintendo," the representative said.

Sony will also occupy a similar space on the mezzanine area of the building. More photos of the location can be found here.
