Canon Fodder: Classic books coming to Nintendo DS

Now we know what Mario reads: As You Like It, Round the World in Eighty Days and The Call of the Wild.

The Times (UK) reported this week that HarperCollins and Nintendo had joined forces to bring classic e-books to the latter's dual-screened DS. (Incidentally, it's sort of cute that someone at The Times thinks there's a game called Mario the Plumber.)

Priced at £15 at amazon.co.uk and set to be released in the United Kingdom only on Boxing Day, the Brit-heavy 100 Classic Book Collection includes books by Charles Dickens, Jules Verne and two of the Brontë sisters as well as 22 plays by William Shakespeare. Browse the list here (scroll down). Even at the full price of £20, you're getting books for 40p (about 80¢) each.

And for kids, what an excuse to bring your DS everywhere!

Nintendo Faces New Wrist Strap Lawsuit

Colorado resident Molly Elvig has filed a class-action lawsuit against Nintendo, claiming that the straps designed to secure the company's Wiimotes to player's hands are insufficient for the task, reports Gamecyte.

Additionally, Elvig's suit claims, Nintendo covered up evidence that the straps were faulty. To support her claim, Elvig offers internal Nintendo documents in which representatives for the firm acknowledge consumer complaints regarding cracked television sets and other mishaps caused by an airborne Wiimote.

Elvig's suit seeks immediate compensation for damages incurred, an effort by Nintendo to refund or replace its product and the establishment of a claims process for those who may negatively be affected by the issue in the future.

If this all sounds eerily similar to the lawsuit Nintendo faced two years ago, that's because many details are exactly the same.

Not only is Ms. Elvig represented by the same lawyer who argued the earlier class-action suit, her claim is also essentially the same -- though Nintendo has since updated the design of the Wiimote strap.

The key difference here is the addition of Elvig's claim that Nintendo obscured evidence of its guilt in the strap issue.

NPD Results: Sony sells less than November 2007, Nintendo prospers

The NPD Group has released their results for console hardware and software sales for the month of November.

As Christmas sales heat up in America, Nintendo single-handedly show the world that consumers aren't afraid of spending their hard earned cash even in the current economic "crisis."

Quite amazingly, in a feat that even the PlayStation 2 didn't achieve outside of Decemeber, Nintendo's Wii console sold over 2 million units, to be joined by the Nintendo DS, which sold 1.57 million. In November 2007 the consoles sold 981 thousand and 1.53 million respectively.

If you still need proof that Nintendo are number one this generation, then prick your ears to listen to Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing;

“Nintendo’s record-breaking sales demonstrate that consumers are looking for the best value not only among video games, but also among all entertainment options.

"Shoppers are looking for gifts that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and Nintendo provides an incomparable range of experiences that gets the whole family involved.”

Microsoft had a similarly impressive month, though on a slightly smaller scale. The Xbox 360 sold 836 thousand units, demonstrating the importance of price to consumers, as well as solid releases like Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty World at War, which both sold over 1 million copies on the system. From the press release (which reads very much like an acceptance speech);

"The Xbox 360 continues to sell at record levels this holiday season, registering the biggest Black Friday and most successful November in its history. Xbox 360 sold a record number of consoles for the month of November at 836,000 units, up from 770 thousand in November 2007.

"With $298 million in third-party game sales in November, the Xbox 360 has generated more revenue at retail for third-party publishers than the PS3 and Wii combined this generation. (November NPD data)

"In addition to a 3:1 console sales lead over the PS3 during the Black Friday weekend, Xbox 360 finished the month of November with more than a 2:1 sales advantage over PS3 (November NPD data and Microsoft internal data)

"This momentum is happening around the world as well; Xbox 360 was the fastest-growing console in Europe for the month of November, with sales up 124 percent year-over-year, versus 43 percent for Wii and three percent for PS3. (Microsoft Internal data)"

Surprisingly, or perhaps not that surprising considering Sony's slugglish advertising tactics and inability to move on price, the PlayStation 3 sold 378 thousand units, under half of the Xbox 360's sales.

What's worse is that despite a year-on-year growth throughout 2008, the PS3 actually sold less this Novemeber than it did in Novemeber 2007, where it sold 466 thousand units. It's going to be some time before the PlayStation 3 is the strong business Sony hopes it'll be.

In fact, all PlayStation hardware had lower sales than the same month in 2007; PlayStation 2 sold 206 thousand, down from 496 thousand; and the PSP sold 421 thousand down from 567 thousand. Sony's sterile press release reads;

"PlayStation 3 has continued its strong momentum during the holiday season with 378,071 hardware units sold in November, representing an increase of almost 100% from October. From January to November 2008, more than 2.8 million PS3s have been sold in the U.S., representing a year-to-date hardware sales growth of more than 60%."

All results provided by the NPD Group can be read below.

Nintendo to Level Up Dragon Quest in U.S.

Amongst the brain-induced fog created by the excitement that Dragon Quest X will be coming to the Nintendo Wii was another tidbit of information that should have RPGamers excited for Dragon Quest's future. At the same press event where the announcement was made, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata also said that he wants to "form a strong tag team to promote Dragon Quest overseas." Iwata further detailed the success Nintendo has had in marketing the supposedly unmarketable Brain Age series in North America, and that he would like to repeat this success for the upcoming DS release of Dragon Quest IX and the Dragon Quest franchise in general. Considering that a Nintendo DS remake of Dragon Quest IV has already made it overseas, and with DS remakes of Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VI on their way, it would be an extra smart move for Nintendo to help market this series.

Iwata wants to "increase the number of people worldwide that understand the appeal of Dragon Quest, which represents all Japanese gaming culture...even if that only turns out to be a single person," and to do so by working in tandem with Square Enix. If Nintendo can bring a small fraction of the western popularity from its other properties over to Dragon Quest, it would be a major boost for the series.

The next Dragon Quest game to be released in North America will be Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride for the Nintendo DS on February 17, 2009. Dragon Quest IX is expected to release in Japan on March 28, 2009, with no North American release date given yet.

Apple declares iPhone a challenger to Nintendo DS

Further shifting attention on the iPhone towards gaming, an Apple executive has out-and-out stated the device is a genuine competitor to the best handheld consoles on the market.

The comments come from Apple Director of Technology Evangelism John Geleynse, who witnesses for Engadget say made the aggressive claims at an iPhone Tech Talk in San Jose, near the company's Cupertino headquarters.

At the developer gathering, the official urged developers to forget about the handset as a traditional cellphone and, as game developers, to think of it strictly as a game console.

"It's not a phone, it's a console experience," Geleynse is reported as saying.

While a bold statement, the claim is in line with an increasingly gaming-centric marketing strategy at Apple. Virtually all of the electronics firm's video ads for the second-generation iPod touch have focused on gaming, while the majority of paid apps at the App Store have typically been games.

Other parties are also known to be getting involved as well. Electronic Arts on Friday said it will host special events at flagship Apple retail stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco during December to promote the iPhone and iPod touch as gaming platforms and show off the software company's game library.

Apple hasn't necessarily needed to ask for help to position its touchscreen handhelds as gaming devices, though, and has been achieving similar or better sales than offerings from Nintendo or Sony. Nintendo recently touted NPD Group data noting that it sold a near-record 1.56 million DS handhelds during November, but is likely to be outpaced by Apple's iPhone sales alone: in summer, the company sold 6.9 million iPhones

In a presentation, id Software co-founder John Carmack also spoke of the fast ARM processor and PowerVR graphics in the iPhone and iPod touch as technically superior to either the DS or Sony's PSP, likening it more to
Sega Dreamcast performance than the scaled-down hardware of Apple's freshly established rivals.
