Acer takes the "most netbooks sold" crown from ASUS

The hotter-than-ever netbook market -- which has seemingly been headed Acer's way for a while now -- has seen its numbers for the third quarter of 2008 arrive, and the Aspire One has indeed overtaken ASUS Eee PC as top dog in units moved. Acer's captured 38.3 percent of the market share, selling 2.15 million netbooks, while ASUS sold about 1.7 million, or 30.3 percent. Possibly adding insult to injury, we hear that an XP-loaded Aspire One can be yours for $299 today at Best Buy. We doubt ASUS will be taking its toys and going home any time soon, but we might've heard a few sniffles coming from its corner during recess.

Sony to cut plants and 8,000 jobs

Sony has announced plans to cut 8,000 electronics jobs - 5% of its global workforce - as well as shutting 10% of its manufacturing sites.

The company said the jobs would be cut by April 2010 but did not say in which countries the staff would go.

Sony said it had been trying to reduce production because of the downturn but warned it still had to do more.

The news came as Japan drastically raised its estimate of the amount its economy shrank from July to September.

The Cabinet Office said the economy had shrunk at an annual rate of 1.8% in the quarter, down from its previous estimate of 0.4%.

Investment cut

Sony aims to generate cost savings of about 100bn yen ($1.1bn; £730m) by the end of the next financial year.

It will cut its investment in electronic operations by 30% and shut down about 10% of its 57 production facilities.

"The number sounds big, but this staff reduction won't be enough," said Katsuhiko Mori, a fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments.

"Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits - the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company."

European Stock-Index Futures Decline; BHP, Nokia May Be Active

European stock futures dropped, indicating the Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index may trim yesterday’s 6.7 percent rally, as lower metal prices damped the outlook for earnings at mining companies.

BHP Billiton Ltd. might lead a decline in copper producers as the base metal slid in Asia. Nokia Oyj and STMicroelectronics NV may be active after Texas Instruments Inc., the second-biggest U.S. chipmaker, cut its forecasts. Q-Cells SE will probably fall as the world’s largest maker of solar cells reduced its profit targets for this year and 2009.

Futures on the Euro Stoxx 50 Index, a benchmark for the euro region, decreased 16, or 0.7 percent, to 2,435 at 7:49 a.m. in London. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 Index is set to open 38 points lower, according to CMC Markets.

Stocks yesterday rallied around the world, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a one-month high, as President-elect Barack Obama pledged to boost the economy with the biggest public-works spending package since the 1950s. Asian stocks rose for a third day today.

“After yesterday’s bumper gains a degree of profit taking is likely,” said London-based Matt Buckland, a dealer at CMC Markets. Economic reports still “emphasize just how deep the recession that we’re facing is. Traders have every reason to be looking cautious.”

A Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors report today showed U.K. home sales fell to the lowest level since at least 1978. Separate figures may show German investor confidence dropped to a near record low in December as the financial crisis pushed Europe’s largest economy deeper into recession.

Annual Loss

Europe’s Stoxx 600 Index has slumped 44 percent this year as governments worldwide introduce measures to buttress their economies from the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. More than $31 trillion has been erased from the value of global equities, while debt losses and writedowns at the world’s largest lenders and insurers approach $1 trillion.

BHP, the world’s largest mining company, and Xstrata Plc, the fourth-biggest copper producer, may lead mining shares lower. The metal resumed its retreat following the biggest gain in a month yesterday. London Metal Exchange copper slid as much as 5 percent to $3,151 a metric ton today.

Lonmin Plc might also fall after Credit Suisse Group AG downgraded the platinum producer to “underperform” from “outperform,” saying the outlook for the industry would remain challenging.

Technology Shares

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile-phone company, may be active. Texas Instruments, which gets more than 15 percent of revenue from Nokia, cut its sales and profit forecasts as the economic slump curbed demand for electronics.

STMicroelectronics, Europe’s biggest semiconductor maker, and ASML Holding NV, the region’s largest maker of semiconductor equipment, may also move.

Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s biggest maker of memory chips, liquid-crystal displays and televisions, said the global recession is wiping out profits at those businesses this quarter.

National Semiconductor Corp., the maker of chips for the five largest mobile-phone makers, forecast third-quarter sales that trailed analysts’ estimates.

Q-Cells will probably decline. The solar company said net income for 2008 will be 185 million euros ($237 million) as weakening demand caused customers to postpone deliveries. That’s down from an earlier prediction of 215 million euros. Sales will amount to 1.225 billion euros, lower than a previous forecast of 1.35 billion euros.

Nokia version of iphone-Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (Tube)

There are getting more and more mobile phone makers entry into the touchscreen phone space after the success of Apple iphone. We have seen the Motorola has its Motorola Krave ZN4, Sony Ericsson has Sony Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, and the worlds number one phone maker, Nokia has just released its touchscreen mobile phone-Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also known as Tube, which is is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition. Let’s see what are the special about this device.

Design
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic measuring 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, is a narrow but fat device. However, the phone is roughly the size of the HTC Diamond, and considerably smaller than both the iPhone, and Samsung Omnia. The device has a large 3,2“, bright nHD (640 x 360 pixels and 16:9 aspect ratio) ,resistive touch screen and tactile feedback color display. The device has variety of input methods: stylus, plectrum and finger touch support for text input and UI control (alphanumeric keypad, full and mini qwerty keyboard, handwriting recognition). Note that There’s a tiny self-portrait camera above the display, along with a quick-action button that pops up a menu of the most-frequently used applications. At the bottom of the screen there are three keys: a send key (green), a home key and an end key (red).

The back of the device has a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and an accompanying dual LED flash. On the side are volume and camera controls, a lock switch, and a MicroSD card slot.

Software
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic can either be used two handed (stylus or finger touch) or one handed (with finger touch), thanks for the S60 5th Edition OS. Also it is important to realise that S60 5th Edition really is the enabling of touch interaction for the existing S60 UI. Within the traditional Symbian Series 60 menu system, you’ll find the typical reliable apps, such as the GPS-powered Nokia Maps, an FM radio, a podcasting client, and both POP/IMAP and Microsoft Exchange mail clients.

What’s new is a touch-sensitive button above the screen that drops down the Media Bar for access to music, movies, photos, the browser and sharing. Not life changing, but quite convenient. There’s also a new home screen with a “Fav Four” of sorts across the top and little else. Tap that friend, and you can get a quick look at recent calls, messages and even related RSS feeds. Pretty neat if you’re a loner, but there’s no way to add more than four friends, or view similar info for your regular contacts that don’t make the cut. Luckily, the traditional S60 home screen is also available.

However, in its first touch-screen handset, Nokia didn’t get a lot right. If you have a touch screen–only device, your navigation gestures (swiping, zooming, and dragging) need to work perfectly. Some touch-screen gadgets hedge their bets by including a track-ball or cursor pad. Nokia puts all its chips on the 5800’s touch screen,
